Although I\’m 20k words into Speedwell, the follow on novel from Peace Lily, creative writing has ground to a halt due to the extensive research that the story has required. I now know more than I ever wanted to about vintage cars! I\’ve even had to amend Peace Lily\’s text as I have learned that American roadster cars were only two-seaters, with what is known as a dickey seat, barely big enough for a child, on the back. Any readers who have read Peace Lily will know that I had four adults riding in the \’roadster\’!
I\’ve just bought many manuals and encyclopaedias on motoring between 1919 and 1929, when Speedwell is set. It was an exciting era for the motor car when ordinary families had their own transport for the first time and the world suddenly expanded for them.
